Feedback PLC’s International Expansion: From NHS to Global Healthcare Markets

Sometimes the path to international expansion starts in unexpected places – like a veterinary clinic. In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, Thomas Oakley shared how Feedback PLC leveraged unique technical capabilities developed for UK veterinarians to revolutionize healthcare delivery in rural India.

From Local Problems to Global Solutions

Feedback PLC’s international journey began with a distinctly local challenge: helping UK veterinarians handle medical imaging in the field. “A lot of the imaging that happens for horses in particular, actually happens in fields and stables, so not in a clinical setting where there’s Wi-Fi,” Thomas explains. “So we had to develop the capability to push imaging over mobile phone networks.”

This seemingly niche solution became the foundation for their international expansion. As Thomas notes, they discovered they could “take an x-ray machine to a rural location within India, acquire the x-ray and then push it over a network straight up to the cloud.”

Strategic Partnerships for Global Impact

Their breakthrough in rural healthcare delivery caught the attention of major technology partners. “We were very lucky, actually, to receive some funding from Amazon web services to form a partnership with themselves and an AI company called Cure AI in order to deliver TB screening in India,” Thomas reveals.

This partnership enabled a transformative healthcare solution. They could now provide “AI-powered TB screening diagnosis within about 30 seconds of an x-ray being taken anywhere in India where you had 3G connectivity.” For the first time, they could “take TB screening out of hospital settings and take it out into the community in really quite remote locations.”

Building Technology for Global Scale

Rather than creating market-specific solutions, Feedback PLC developed core technology that could adapt to different healthcare environments. Their platform became what Thomas describes as “essentially a digital glue that pulls healthcare environments together.”

This approach proved particularly valuable during COVID-19, enabling “consultants who were treating patients in Manchester and advising on treatment plans whilst being at home with family in Delhi.” They demonstrated how technology could “completely remove the geographic parameters of care.”

Managing Cross-Border Compliance

Their medical device certification, already a competitive advantage in the UK, became crucial for international expansion. “One of the unique things about that is that in the UK and in fact, internationally, a lot of the radiology imaging is considered a medical device function,” Thomas explains.

This certification helped them maintain consistent standards across markets while differentiating from competitors. As Thomas notes, “We are certainly in the UK, the only clinical collaboration platform that is certified as medical device for image display.”

The Vision for Global Healthcare

Their international expansion aims to fundamentally transform healthcare delivery. Thomas envisions a future where you can “very easily create a system where patients can come and go from any care setting, have that care setting add to their record, and be treated by specialists who could be anywhere in the world.”

This vision is already delivering results. They’ve achieved consistent 74% year-over-year growth for three years running, with an 89% increase in sales in their latest period. More importantly, they’ve demonstrated the ability to reduce patient wait times by 70% without adding clinical staff – a model that could transform healthcare delivery globally.

The Path Forward

Looking ahead, Thomas sees their technology becoming a universal platform for healthcare collaboration and delivery. Their goal is to enable a world where geography no longer limits access to medical expertise, and where technology bridges the gaps between different healthcare systems.

The lesson for founders? Sometimes the key to international expansion isn’t creating market-specific solutions, but identifying universal problems that transcend borders. By solving fundamental challenges in healthcare delivery – like how to share medical images over poor network connections – Feedback PLC created a platform that could scale globally without losing its core value proposition.
