The Infrastructure Innovation Challenge: Buzz Solutions’ Path to Modernizing Utility Inspections

Multiple market forces are pushing utilities toward modernization. In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, Buzz Solutions CEO Kaitlyn Albertoli revealed how they’re helping utilities transform their inspection processes through AI.

The Perfect Storm “Many utility companies were facing the pressures of aging grid infrastructure, of the need to electrify, and of many renewables coming onto the grid, as well as climatic impacts that have caused greater stress and strain on the grid,” Kaitlyn explains. These pressures created an urgent need for more efficient inspection methods.

The Data Deluge Through interviews with 35 utilities, they uncovered a universal challenge. “They said they were collecting so much more data of their infrastructure and didn’t have a seamless way to analyze it,” Kaitlyn shares. The rise of drone inspections had created a data analysis bottleneck.

The Human Element The problem wasn’t just technical – it was about optimizing valuable human resources. “These Lyman field technicians don’t need to be sitting behind a desk analyzing data. These are very highly skilled, highly trained individuals that need to be out in the fields conducting this maintenance,” Kaitlyn points out.

The AI Solution Their approach focuses on immediate value delivery. “We show up with pre-trained algorithms that can start working on day one, can start analyzing data on day one, and can plug in directly into the existing workflow,” Kaitlyn explains. This reduces adoption friction in an industry known for cautious technology adoption.

Demonstrating Impact Rather than relying on marketing claims, they focus on results. “We see that showing a utility how the solution works, how the AI works, and then the results that we’re able to generate is much better than any words that we could say or any marketing that we could put in front of them,” Kaitlyn notes.

The Vision Ahead Their mission extends beyond efficiency gains. “We want to safeguard the world’s energy infrastructure,” Kaitlyn states. “Specific to utilities, our vision is to help reduce wildfires, reduce power outages, and reduce force shutdowns from failed grid infrastructure, while helping utilities unlock capacity of electrifying and onboarding renewables.”

This approach has attracted major players like the New York Power Authority and partnerships with the Electric Power Research Institute. For B2B founders targeting traditional industries, Buzz Solutions’ journey offers valuable lessons:

  1. Focus on immediate value delivery
  2. Address both technical and human challenges
  3. Make adoption frictionless
  4. Demonstrate results over marketing claims
  5. Align with broader industry transformation goals

Their success shows that even in traditionally conservative industries, innovation can thrive when it addresses both immediate operational needs and long-term strategic goals.
