The LODAS Markets Playbook: Transforming a Traditional Industry Through Technology

Three years ago, setting up an alternative investment trade required mountains of paperwork and weeks of processing time. Today, as shared in a recent episode of Category Visionaries, LODAS Markets has reduced that process to five minutes. This transformation didn’t happen by accident – it’s the result of a deliberate strategy to bring exchange-grade technology to an industry that had resisted modernization.

Finding the Technology Gap

The alternative investment market had a clear problem: “I had a lot of family members and friends that were trapped in illiquid investments. And in some cases, the outcome was a total nightmare. They wanted to sell, but there just was no way out,” explains LODAS Markets CEO Brian King. But the real insight wasn’t just identifying the liquidity problem – it was recognizing that technology could solve it.

Exchange Architecture as Innovation Driver

Rather than building a traditional broker-dealer platform, LODAS Markets made a crucial decision: operate as an Alternative Trading System (ATS). As Brian notes, they function “a lot like a stock exchange. It’s just a stock exchange for real estate.” This infrastructure choice set them apart in a market where “there aren’t many competitors.”

Technology as Trust Builder

In an industry built on personal relationships and paper processes, LODAS Markets took a contrarian approach. “We’ve made the process incredibly simple. Literally, somebody can set up an account in less than five minutes. But it’s all done through technology, which I think if you look back, even just three years, nothing was done with technology in this space,” Brian reveals.

Solving the Distribution Challenge

Rather than fighting against existing industry relationships, LODAS Markets built technology that enhanced them. They created tools that helped financial advisors better serve their clients, turning potential competitors into partners. This approach helped solve what Brian identifies as their biggest challenge: “The biggest initial hurdle that we had was being able to get supply. That means the people that are looking to sell.”

Building for Institutional Requirements

Success in traditional markets requires understanding institutional buyers’ needs. “The institutional buyers that we have, they have a very specific appetite, meaning that in many cases, they have reserved or earmarked several million dollars for a specific product or asset class,” Brian explains. This insight shaped their technology platform’s development, ensuring it could handle large-scale institutional trading requirements.

Breaking Down Industry Silos

Looking ahead, LODAS Markets sees technology as the key to broader market transformation. “Right now, everything works kind of in a silo and so to be able to connect to other institutions through technology and we’re just on the cusp of doing that now,” Brian shares. This vision of interconnected markets represents the next frontier in their industry transformation journey.

For tech founders targeting traditional industries, LODAS Markets’ playbook offers valuable lessons:

  • Start with deep domain expertise but approach problems with fresh technological solutions
  • Build technology that enhances rather than replaces existing industry relationships
  • Focus on removing friction points that industry veterans have accepted as “normal”
  • Design for institutional requirements from day one

With between one and two billion dollars represented on their marketplace, LODAS Markets demonstrates that even the most traditional industries are ready for technological transformation – if approached with the right strategy.
