The Story of Dasera: Building the Future of Enterprise Data Security

The year was 2019, and the data security landscape was about to change. In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, Dasera founder Ani Chaudhuri shared how a chance meeting with a UC Berkeley PhD student would lead to the creation of one of today’s leading data security companies.

From Academic Research to Market Need

The story begins with Noah Johnson, a PhD student at UC Berkeley working on privacy-preserving algorithms. When Ani met Noah in early 2019, they began exploring how to commercialize this academic research. As Ani recalls, “We started talking about his PhD work. And were excited to talk to other people about using his PhD work.”

But the path from research to product wasn’t straightforward. The first six months were spent interviewing potential customers, “trying to understand the problem and defining it very tightly.” This early research would prove crucial in shaping Dasera’s direction.

Navigating the COVID Storm

Just as the company was finding its footing, the world changed. “Within, I think, four months of the company’s founding Covid hit,” Ani shares. “And it was almost like the world had come to a standstill in many aspects. We weren’t even sure how this would all end up.”

But rather than derailing their plans, this period of uncertainty allowed the team to focus on product development. The initial vision of an insider threat tool evolved into something much more comprehensive.

The Pivot to Platform

What started as a tool for inspecting SQL queries transformed into a complete data security platform. “By the time that we’re ready… in 2021, mid to late 2021,” Ani explains, they had expanded their vision to “not only look at insider threat, but the entire data lifecycle.” The platform now handles “structured, semi structured, unstructured and application data in the cloud and on prem.”

This evolution was driven by a deep understanding of the market’s needs. Ani identified four fundamental questions that every organization needs to answer about data security: “Where is my data? What data do I have? Who has access to it? And what risk are they introducing when they’re interacting with that data?”

Building for Scale

With the product vision clear, Dasera made two strategic decisions that would accelerate their growth. First, they disrupted the pricing model, offering their solution at “$500 per datastore per month.” Second, they pursued strategic partnerships, recognizing that while major players were acquiring companies, “there are lots of companies that compete with them and they need these weapons too.”

The Future of Data Security

Looking ahead, Ani sees data security evolving far beyond current concerns about generative AI tools like ChatGPT. “Enterprise AI solutions and applications is going to be a bigger headache than any chat GPT that you are thinking about today,” he predicts.

The future, according to Ani, will require solutions that can “automate a bunch of remediations” while being context-aware enough to avoid overwhelming users with alerts. He envisions a system that integrates signals from various platforms and provides automated remediation capabilities, making data security more manageable and effective.

For Dasera, this vision represents an enormous opportunity. With less than 1% of companies having mature data security strategies in place, they’re positioned at the forefront of a growing market. Through their combination of technical excellence, strategic partnerships, and innovative pricing, they’re making enterprise-grade data security accessible to organizations of all sizes.

The story of Dasera isn’t just about building a security product – it’s about recognizing and solving a fundamental challenge in our increasingly data-driven world. As companies continue to generate and rely on more data, Dasera’s journey from academic research to enterprise platform offers valuable lessons for founders looking to tackle similarly complex challenges.
