The Story of DexCare: Building the Future of Healthcare Access
Sometimes the most powerful innovations emerge from personal necessity. In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, DexCare CEO Derek Streat shared how a family health crisis sparked a mission that would eventually transform healthcare access across America.
A Personal Mission Meets Market Opportunity
After years of success in adtech, Derek’s entrepreneurial journey took an unexpected turn when his young daughter faced a serious illness. “We had to kind of shut everything were doing and shut everything down, our family that were doing, to focus on her care,” he recalls. This experience in 2009 became a catalyst for change: “Once we got her stabilized, I then determined that the best way for me to make an impact to unite my entrepreneurial efforts and the work that I do along with social impact, was to focus on health care.”
From Providence to Independence
DexCare’s story began not as a standalone startup, but as an innovation within Providence Health System. The company emerged from a unique environment created by Aaron Martin, previously with Amazon, and Sarah Vaisdi, Providence’s chief digital officer. Their team was tasked with solving critical problems faced by the large health system.
“A handful of things just can’t be solved by partners or invested in because they just simply don’t exist,” Derek explains. DexCare became one of four companies spun out of Providence, built to address a fundamental challenge in healthcare delivery: connecting patients with the right care at the right time.
Building a New Category
Rather than simply improving existing processes, DexCare set out to create an entirely new category in healthcare access. “What makes this a new one is that we’re optimizing it in ways that are very different than what happens out there today,” Derek notes. Their platform focuses on three core innovations: making care more discoverable online, intelligent navigation to the best care options, and optimizing capacity across the healthcare system.
Validation Before Scale
Unlike many startups that rush to market, DexCare took a methodical approach. “We really have been a product in production inside of this large health system for several years now at this point,” Derek shares. This extended validation period proved crucial, allowing them to refine their solution within one of the country’s largest health systems before taking it to market.
The strategy paid off. Today, DexCare is “either doubling or quadrupling every year across every metric you look at right now in the company,” according to Derek. Their growth reflects both the urgent need for their solution and the strength of their validated approach.
A Vision for Healthcare’s Future
Looking ahead, DexCare’s ambitions extend far beyond their current success. “Our vision is that everyone everywhere enjoys exceptional access to the best expertise to treat, prevent and cure illness,” Derek explains. This vision encompasses not just treatment, but the entire healthcare journey.
The company sees a future where healthcare delivery becomes increasingly sophisticated and consumer-centric. “Once you start opening the door to having any sort of digital enablement of delivery of care… you start meeting the needs by consumers to be more efficient and just consumer centric in delivering care for them,” Derek notes.
This evolution will include digital therapeutics, predictive care, and automated care gap closure. As Derek explains, “I think we’re on this journey where by making it easier for everybody to access care, and in a world doing it, in a world where patients benefit, but so do providers, they’re not all getting burned out and so do health systems, so they can be around to actually deliver care.”
The story of DexCare reflects a larger truth about innovation in healthcare: sometimes the most powerful solutions come not from disrupting the system, but from deeply understanding its complexities and building tools that make it work better for everyone involved. As healthcare continues to evolve, DexCare’s journey from internal solution to category creator offers valuable lessons for entrepreneurs looking to make a lasting impact in complex industries.
