The Story of RegScale: Building the Future of Enterprise Compliance

Few startup founders begin their entrepreneurial journey in nuclear weapons. But for Travis Howerton, co-founder of RegScale, two decades of managing compliance for America’s most sensitive defense programs revealed a problem that would eventually lead him to build a revolutionary compliance automation platform.

“I spent 20 plus years in the US nuclear weapons program, where I became their first chief technology officer, responsible for safety, security and reliability of the US nuclear weapons stockpile,” Travis explains. “I got to see firsthand some of the challenges with compliance, where we were very risk adverse – and you want us to be with weapons that could end the world.”

The transition from government to entrepreneurship wasn’t immediate. Travis first moved to Oak Ridge National Lab, which he describes as “an excellent hybrid” environment. “It’s funded by the government, but it’s run by the University of Tennessee and Patel Corporation, so it runs like a private sector business.” This hybrid experience proved invaluable, giving him exposure to both government requirements and private sector dynamics.

But throughout his career transitions, one constant remained: the pain of compliance. “If you want to go to a bar and shut a conversation down, just start talking about regulatory compliance,” Travis notes. “Everybody hates it. Huge documents, nobody wants to write, nobody wants to read.”

This universal pain point became the catalyst for RegScale. “We just thought that was one of the last big problems left in IT that’s holding back digital transformation,” Travis explains. “And we wanted to take our stab at can we combine AI and automation and new ways of thinking to reimagine how that’s done.”

The timing proved perfect. As enterprises accelerate their digital transformation efforts, traditional compliance approaches are breaking under the strain of real-time, API-driven operations. RegScale’s modern approach, built on cutting-edge technology stacks, offered a way forward.

Early success came from finding what Travis calls “visionaries who are excited about the vision.” Their first major customers – a large financial institution and a defense contractor – saw beyond the early product limitations to the larger transformation RegScale was enabling. These early wins helped attract investor attention, particularly given the rigorous procurement processes these organizations typically require.

But perhaps most remarkable has been RegScale’s growth strategy. Rather than following the traditional enterprise software playbook of gated content and aggressive lead capture, they’ve made their platform openly accessible. “We put a lot of content out there and made it easy to get,” Travis explains. This approach has led to over 300,000 downloads of their community edition.

Looking ahead, Travis sees RegScale becoming an essential part of the enterprise digital transformation toolkit. “If you think about doing digital transformation clouds, there AI is there, all this great tooling is there, but a lot of times it’s the regulatory requirements and the paperwork burden and all this procedural hurdle that’s built over time. That’s what slows people down, makes them miss their schedule, makes them fall behind against another competitor.”

This vision extends beyond just making compliance easier – it’s about enabling the next wave of enterprise innovation. As Travis puts it, they want to be “part of solving a big problem.” Success for him isn’t measured just in revenue or growth metrics, but in impact: “If you ask me like what being successful in five years looks like, it’d be that we have hundreds of customers who say, ‘hey, they really helped us get where we needed our business to go.'”

For a founder who spent decades ensuring nuclear weapons remained safe and secure, transforming enterprise compliance might seem like a smaller challenge. But by tackling one of the last major barriers to digital transformation, RegScale’s impact could be equally far-reaching.
