When your product gets too many positive reviews, that’s usually a good problem to have. But for Formation, their stellar online reputation actually created skepticism. “People were giving us feedback that they thought our program must be a scam because there wasn’t a single thing they could find that was negative about us,” Sophie Novati revealed in a recent episode of Category Visionaries.

The real test came when negative reviews finally appeared. “We had our first experience with negative reviews that kind of blew up on Reddit, and the team was absolutely devastated,” Sophie recalls. “I think people were literally crying on our team just thinking that we had failed.”

The challenge wasn’t just managing negative feedback – it was navigating the complex dynamics of tech community platforms. “Reddit is like a crazy place,” Sophie notes. “We have a lot of competitors where I’m not going to name any names, but when we post, we can tell that a bunch of people are just creating, like, one time fake accounts and basically responding.”

The manipulation went beyond fake accounts. Sophie observed competitors “downvote and upvote each other’s comments to kind of get traction.” The temptation to fight fire with fire was strong. “It was very tempting to kind of just have the same strategy where let’s like, okay, well, we create some accounts and we’re going to respond back and we’re going to upvote our things.”

Instead, Formation chose radical transparency. “We’ve constantly been very middle of the road neutral in terms of our stances, applauding our competitors in ways that they are doing things well and fairly firmly pointing out areas in which they are not doing a good enough job,” Sophie explains.

This approach extended to their own shortcomings. Sophie emphasizes, “We know there’s a lot of things that we don’t do well, and we try to openly kind of admit that as much as possible.”

The strategy paid off. Community members began noticing Formation’s consistent authenticity. “We had some people on Reddit who actually commented and know, we noticed that you guys do this and have noticed kind of, like, the longstanding track record of the fair comments that you have posted in light of some pretty ridiculous kind of attacks.”

Formation’s approach to community management reflects their broader philosophy about technical education. Just as they believe in “removing the barriers of access in terms of education,” they’ve chosen to be transparent about both their strengths and weaknesses.

Their success in navigating Reddit drama provides valuable lessons for founders dealing with online reputation management:

  1. Resist the temptation to fight manipulation with manipulation
  2. Acknowledge both competitor strengths and your own weaknesses
  3. Maintain consistent messaging even during crises
  4. Build trust through long-term authentic engagement
  5. Let community members become your advocates

The results validate this approach. Formation has maintained strong relationships with technical communities while expanding their reach. Their recent Netflix partnership and average student compensation increases of $100,000 demonstrate that authentic community engagement can coexist with business growth.

For founders building in competitive spaces, Formation’s experience shows that the best defense against online attacks isn’t manipulation or aggressive counterattacks – it’s consistent, authentic engagement that builds trust over time. Sometimes the most powerful response to drama is simply staying true to your values.
