Radius Agent’s Product Development Philosophy: Building Tech for Non-Technical Users

Building technology for non-technical users presents a unique challenge: how do you create sophisticated solutions without overwhelming your users? In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, Radius Agent CEO Biju Ashokan revealed their unconventional approach to this challenge – one that has led to rapid adoption in an industry traditionally resistant to technological change.

Understanding the Real User

Many tech companies make the mistake of building for early adopters. Radius took the opposite approach, starting with a clear understanding of their core user. “The typical real estate agent is like 45 to 50 years old and it’s a woman,” Biju explains. “We need to target that audience… we want to make tech so simple that anyone can use it.”

This insight shaped their entire product development philosophy. Instead of pushing technology for technology’s sake, Radius focused on making complex tools accessible. As Biju notes, “We don’t force tech on agents… we would ask them what they want and we give them exactly what they need.”

Building a Living Laboratory

Rather than relying on traditional user research, Radius created a built-in feedback loop through their platform. “There is an audio and video conferencing application within our mobile app and web app,” Biju shares. “I love to get in those calls and see what they’re saying, because they’re basically giving me my next steps to build whatever I need to build next.”

This direct connection to users provides continuous insights that shape product development. It’s a stark contrast to the typical approach of building features based on competitor analysis or market research.

The Operating System Approach

Instead of overwhelming users with complex features, Radius positioned their technology as an enabler of existing workflows. “We are trying to make things really simple for real estate agents and teams to do their day to day business,” Biju explains. “We are a suite of tools and services that agents can use to make that one extra sale to make their life simpler.”

This approach recognizes that their users are entrepreneurs first and technology users second. As Biju puts it, “real estate agents are exactly like founders… They don’t get a salary. Everyone thinks they make easy money, they work really hard to be where they are and have taken a lot of risk to be there.”

Scalability Without Complexity

While keeping the user interface simple, Radius maintains sophisticated technology under the hood. “We kind of make sure any problem that is thrown at us, we have a tech solution so that it’s scalable,” Biju notes. “We don’t want to make a solution for just five people. We want to make it for 50,000 people.”

This balance between simplicity and scalability extends to their entire product suite, from “recruiting other agents, whether it is educational, fintech support, transaction support, listing management, offer management, client management.”

The Power of Brand Independence

A key innovation in their approach is allowing users to maintain their independence while accessing enterprise-grade tools. “If you’re an agent working for Compass, you need to use the Compass brand. But with us, that’s not the case,” Biju explains. This approach positions Radius as what Biju calls “shopify for real estate agents,” providing powerful tools without forcing users into a rigid system.

Building for Long-term Adoption

The results of this approach speak for themselves. In a down market, Radius has “probably grew like five X this year when most other companies in real estate are not showing growth at all.” Their expansion across “California, Colorado, Texas, Florida, Oregon, Georgia and Washington” demonstrates the scalability of their approach.

For B2B tech founders building products for non-technical users, Radius’s philosophy offers valuable lessons. Success isn’t about dumbing down technology – it’s about making sophisticated solutions accessible and relevant to your users’ actual needs. By focusing on simplicity without sacrificing capability, you can build tools that drive adoption while enabling genuine digital transformation.
