The Story of NewsBridge: Building the Future of Video Understanding
Sometimes the most impactful companies start with a deviation from the expected path. For NewsBridge CEO Philippe Petitpont, that deviation came during his rocket science studies when he chose to create a student TV station instead of spending time in wind tunnels.
In a recent Category Visionaries episode, Philippe shared how this seemingly small decision would shape his entire career trajectory and eventually lead to founding a company that’s revolutionizing video content creation.
From Rockets to Broadcasting
Though Philippe entered engineering school with dreams of becoming a rocket scientist, his passion led him in a different direction. “The first thing I did going to my studies was not really to study rocket science because I think it was fun, but actually not as I imagined. So the first thing I did is creating my student TV station during the school time, and I was spending way more time in this student TV station… than in the blowers to test the wind and the rockets.”
This early pivot led him into broadcast engineering, where he worked on infrastructure for major events like the Soccer World Cup. But even in this role, he encountered limitations that would eventually inspire NewsBridge’s creation.
The Pain Point That Sparked Innovation
Working in broadcasting, Philippe encountered a fundamental problem: “When you come in this kind of organization, your role is not really to develop software, it’s not to address major pain point that the industry had. So you’re kind of blocked in, okay, you just need to solve this need of this journalist or this dozen of journalists and then it’s done.”
The frustration of seeing systemic problems without the freedom to solve them led to action. Philippe explains, “It was quite complex because we had lots of content, it was too complex for human to understand what was in the video and everything and there was some strong pain point and it was very frustrating to not being able to explore some other way of working on other organizations.”
Building NewsBridge
The solution came through collaboration. Philippe teamed up with his “train brother” from the AI and big data industry, combining media expertise with technical capabilities. “I said here’s the problem that we have in the media industry, there’s too many video, too much video and people are struggling with that… And while it’s complex, editing is very long and we do something together.”
Today, NewsBridge has expanded beyond its French origins, serving clients across “Europe, obviously in France, in Spain, in the UK, in Germany, also in the Middle East.” The company hit a significant milestone when they “hit the million dollar in recurring revenue early last year” and maintains a pace to “double this turnover each year.”
The Vision Ahead
NewsBridge’s ambitions extend far beyond their current success. As Philippe explains, “What we want to achieve is to be sure that everyone can tell a story using video and that’s our mission.” This vision requires significant investment in infrastructure and talent, with plans to “more than double” their team size in the coming years.
The ultimate goal is to automate the entire video creation process. Philippe envisions a future where complex tasks like creating holiday videos could be accomplished “with maybe a prompting experience or something like that.”
The path to this future is methodical. “The three step are being automatized,” Philippe notes. “The first step is nearly done. Let’s now deep dive on the two next.” This systematic approach to innovation, combined with their deep understanding of user needs, positions NewsBridge to potentially reshape how the world creates and consumes video content.
For a company that began with a student choosing TV production over rocket testing, NewsBridge’s journey demonstrates how following one’s genuine interests, even when they deviate from the expected path, can lead to revolutionary innovations in unexpected places.
