The Story of WurkNow: Building the Future of Light Industrial Staffing

Thirty years in the staffing industry teaches you a lot about what’s broken. In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, Sammy Singh shared how his journey from retail worker to staffing industry veteran led to creating WurkNow, a platform that’s reshaping how light industrial staffing works.

From Retail to Staffing Revolution

Singh’s path to founding WurkNow wasn’t straightforward. “As an immigrant… I’m a Sikh Indian Punjabi who grew up in Brunei, which is on the island of Borneo,” he explains. After moving to the US in 1990, he started in retail before discovering the staffing industry in 1995. This diverse background gave him a unique perspective on the challenges faced by both workers and employers.

The problems he encountered were systemic. In Southern California’s warehouse districts, “30, 40 staffing agencies within a five mile radius” would often serve the same customers, while workers bounced between agencies seeking minimum wage positions. The inefficiency was staggering, but so was the opportunity.

Building a Comprehensive Solution

Instead of creating another point solution, Singh and his team took on the ambitious task of building an end-to-end platform. “Our typically agency is going to use about five to eight different technologies to run their business,” he notes. Their goal was to consolidate these tools into a single, comprehensive solution.

This approach wasn’t without risks. Singh admits they “screwed up on many by going very broad.” But the team’s responsiveness to customer needs – building new features like time tracking when clients requested them – ultimately led to a more robust platform.

Innovation Through Understanding

WurkNow’s development has been guided by deep industry knowledge. The company’s blockchain initiative, for instance, emerged from understanding the real-world implications of compliance issues. As Singh explains, it was designed to create immutable records of time card changes and compliance actions, protecting both employers and employees in potential disputes.

Customer-Centric Growth

Perhaps most telling about WurkNow’s approach is how they’ve funded their growth. Rather than pursuing traditional venture capital, they found success with customer investment: “Everything we have raised has come from friends, people we have done business with in the past. But the largest chunk came from our own clients who looked at our software and said gosh, if you’re solving this for me, I know others can use this.”

The Vision Ahead

Looking to the future, Singh’s vision for WurkNow is both ambitious and focused. “Work now is going to be the authority of hourly labor,” he declares, envisioning a future where “majority of the three pls and staffing agencies all have built such a huge ecosystem that without work now it would be secondary to do business in this industry.”

This isn’t just about technology – it’s about creating a more equitable system. Singh sees WurkNow becoming “a fair, equitable and amazing user base system that really flags not only the client but as well as the temporary worker. Both of them are put on a pedestal and they both trust each other to be part of this ecosystem.”

The company is already seeing impressive results, “pretty much at track of doubling our business from last year 70% to 80% growth every month versus last year.” But for Singh, success isn’t just about growth metrics – it’s about fundamentally improving how the light industrial staffing industry works for everyone involved.

WurkNow’s story is a reminder that sometimes the biggest opportunities come from understanding an industry’s problems deeply enough to reimagine how it could work better. By focusing on the needs of both workers and employers, WurkNow is building more than just a platform – they’re creating a new standard for how staffing should work in the digital age.
