Building Trust and Scale in Regulated Markets: Buzz Solutions' Path to Enterprise Success

When 35 utility companies all share the same pain point, you know you've struck gold. For Buzz Solutions' co-founder Kaitlyn Albertoli, these early customer interviews revealed a critical gap in infrastructure inspection: utilities were drowning in visual data with no efficient way to analyze it.

What started as a Stanford launchpad project has evolved into a company reshaping how utilities handle infrastructure inspections. The timing couldn't have been better. "Many utility companies were facing the pressures of aging grid infrastructure, of the need to electrify, and of many renewables coming onto the grid, as well as climatic impacts that have caused greater stress and strain on the grid," Kaitlyn explains.

The solution was clear: develop an AI-powered platform to analyze visual data from drones, helicopters, and ground-based imagery. But in an industry where processes have remained unchanged for decades, gaining trust and driving adoption required a different approach.

Rather than relying on traditional sales tactics, Buzz Solutions focused on demonstration-driven trust building. "We see that showing a utility how the solution works, how the AI works, and then the results that we're able to generate is much better than any words that we could say or any marketing that we could put in front of them," Kaitlyn shares.

This approach proved crucial in navigating the typically lengthy 18-24 month utility sales cycles. However, Kaitlyn notes an interesting shift: "We are seeing that the utility sales cycle is actually shortening. And a big part of that is the driving factors that are requiring faster utility adoption of new technologies."

Understanding the importance of seamless integration, Buzz Solutions developed a plug-and-play solution. "We show up with pre-trained algorithms that can start working on day one, can start analyzing data on day one, and can plug in directly into the existing workflow," Kaitlyn explains. This strategy addressed a key concern for utilities: minimizing disruption to established processes.

The company's focus on practical implementation extends to their workforce solution. "These Lyman field technicians don't need to be sitting behind a desk analyzing data. These are very highly skilled, highly trained individuals that need to be out in the fields conducting this maintenance," Kaitlyn points out. By automating the analysis process, Buzz Solutions helps utilities optimize their workforce deployment.

For founders targeting regulated industries, Kaitlyn emphasizes two critical lessons: resilience and patience. "Resilience is just a really big part of being a Founder and knowing how to quickly get back up again and to keep going, but also how to harness that feedback," she reflects. "Especially in this market, in the utility industry, patience is required. And being able to have the right amount of patience, but also the right amount of drive is really important too."

Looking ahead, Buzz Solutions' vision extends beyond utility inspections. "We want to safeguard the world's energy infrastructure," Kaitlyn declares. Their immediate goals include reducing wildfires, power outages, and forced shutdowns while helping utilities accelerate renewable energy adoption.

For B2B founders, Buzz Solutions' journey offers valuable insights into entering regulated markets: focus on demonstrable results over marketing claims, build solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing workflows, and maintain the delicate balance between patience and persistent drive for innovation.

Five takeaways from this conversation.
